Rail is especially competitive for Warsaw; Riga and Tallinn by train involve joining the Vilnius–Riga route from Kaunas. This guide was fact-checked on 20 August 2026, but recheck timetables and dynamic fares for your date.

If you are still exploring Lithuania, start with our weekend trips from Kaunas without a car. Kaunas is a useful overland base because its bus and railway stations are close together.

The times above are the fastest operator listings, not guaranteed duration. On 20 August 2026, FlixBus route pages advertised lead-in fares from €16.48 to Riga, €31.98 to Tallinn and €27.40 to Warsaw. These are marketing snapshots: the price for your departure may be higher, and Lux Express, ECOLINES and rail operators use their own availability and pricing rules.

Begin at the correct Kaunas station

Kaunas Bus Station is at Vytauto pr. 24; the official station page lists international ticket sales, luggage storage and assistance. Kaunas Railway Station is atM. K. Čiurlionio g. 16. They are only a short walk apart, but some coaches also use roadside stops such as Ninth Fort. The stop printed on your ticket is the one that matters.

Arrive early, allowing extra time for mobility needs, a bicycle or additional luggage. Our guide to getting around Kaunas helps with the local leg to the station.

Kaunas to Riga is easiest by direct coach

FlixBus and Lux Express currently sell direct Kaunas–Riga journeys, and ECOLINES also lists the route. A direct coach avoids backtracking and normally takes around four hours. Daytime departures vary by date. Riga International Coach Terminal is at Prāgas iela 1, beside the central market and close to the railway station.

Rail works if you prefer trains, but the Vilnius–Riga service does not pass through Kaunas. The usual solution is an LTG Link feeder to Kaišiadorys, where you join the international train, or a connection in Vilnius if the planner offers a better protected itinerary. LTG Link describes the Vilnius–Riga leg as daily and direct. In August 2026, engineering changes moved its times enough to alter the Kaunas connection, so do not assemble the trip from an old annual PDF.

Kaunas to Tallinn gives you a simple coach or a rail adventure

For a practical trip, book one direct coach from Kaunas to Tallinn. Current FlixBus listings show daytime and overnight options, while Lux Express runs through Baltic and Warsaw services on selected schedules. Journey times vary considerably by stops and operator, so distinguish a genuinely direct vehicle from an itinerary that asks you to change in Riga.

The train is more interesting but takes most of a day. First reach Kaišiadorys or Vilnius from Kaunas. The international service then runs through Riga towards Valga; passengers continue to Tallinn on an Elron train after the planned Valga transfer. LTG Link sells a through ticket for the international portion and currently publishes a standard Vilnius–Tallinn fare of €39. Add the separate Kaunas feeder and compare the total with a direct coach.

The Valga connection is coordinated, but it can be short. Vivi’s August 2026 international timetable also showed replacement-bus sections on some dates because of railway work. Travel with food, water and a charged phone, keep luggage manageable, and use a through ticket where offered so your passenger rights cover the connected international journey.

Kaunas to Warsaw works well by coach or train

Direct coaches are usually fastest. FlixBus and Lux Express both list Kaunas–Warsaw, with daytime and night possibilities. Check the arrival carefully: Warsaw West, an airport stop and other city stops are not interchangeable. A bargain ticket is less useful if it leaves you far from your accommodation after midnight.

The train is a strong daytime alternative. The current annual pattern leaves Kaunas in the early afternoon, changes from LTG Link to PKP Intercity at Mockava and reaches Warsaw Central in the evening. One ticket covers both carriers. The published pattern is about 6 hours 25 minutes in elapsed time, although the clock appears to show less because Poland is one hour behind Lithuania. Riga and Tallinn use the same time as Kaunas.

Choose the coach when speed or an overnight ride matters. Choose rail when you value more movement, a central arrival and a single protected contract across the Mockava transfer. Dynamic train offers can be non-refundable, so read the fare conditions before paying.

Rail Baltica is not yet the train you can book

Maps of Rail Baltica can create the impression that a new fast Kaunas–Riga–Tallinn railway already exists. It does not. LTG Infra’s June 2026 project update says phase one prioritises the Tallinn– Pärnu–Panevėžys–Kaunas–Warsaw line for completion by 2030, while major sections north of Kaunas are still under construction. Today’s journeys use existing LTG Link, Vivi, Elron and PKP networks.

Construction and ordinary maintenance can mean shifted trains, replacement buses or tighter connections. Check the operator again 48 hours before departure and on the travel morning. Never build a non-refundable onward booking around the minimum published connection without a buffer.

Carry the right identity documents

Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia and Poland are in Schengen, but “no routine border booth” does not mean “no document”. EU citizens should carry a valid passport or national ID card. Non-EU citizens need a valid passport and the visa or residence document relevant to their status. A driving licence, bank card or photo of a passport is not a substitute for a travel document.

This matters especially for Warsaw travel now. The European Commission’s current register says Poland has temporary controls at its land border with Lithuania from 5 April to1 October 2026. Checks may add time to road or rail journeys. Requirements and control periods can change, so verify them before leaving rather than relying on this date months later.

Plan luggage and accessibility before booking

Coach allowances are operator-specific. Lux Express currently includes a 5 kg cabin item and a 23 kg hold bag; FlixBus lists a 7 kg small bag and a 20 kg checked bag. Keep passports, medication, electronics and valuables in your cabin bag. Reserve bicycles or special luggage before travel; free space on the day is not guaranteed.

Do not infer accessibility from a bus icon or a train symbol. LTG Link requests international assistance at least 24 hours in advance. Lux Express asks for 36 hours’ notice when assistance is needed, while FlixBus requires advance arrangements and distinguishes a folded wheelchair in the hold from remaining in a wheelchair aboard. Confirm every transfer and replacement vehicle with the operating carrier.

A reliable booking sequence

  1. Search your whole route and exact date on LTG Link, FlixBus, Lux Express and ECOLINES.
  2. Compare elapsed door-to-door time, not only the scheduled vehicle time.
  3. Check “direct” versus “one change”, the station address and Warsaw’s time zone.
  4. Prefer one through ticket for connected rail legs where it is available.
  5. Read luggage, refund and accessibility rules before choosing the cheapest fare.
  6. Save the ticket offline and recheck works, platforms and border controls before departure.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Can I travel from Kaunas to Riga, Tallinn and Warsaw without flying?

Yes. Current operator listings include direct coaches from Kaunas to all three cities. Warsaw also has a practical daily rail itinerary with one change in Mockava. Riga and Tallinn are reachable by rail too, but you first need to join the Vilnius–Riga corridor from Kaunas, so the coach is normally simpler.

Is there a direct bus from Kaunas to Riga, Tallinn and Warsaw?

Direct services appear in the current FlixBus and Lux Express route networks, while ECOLINES is another operator worth checking on selected dates. A search result can still include a change, so read the itinerary rather than relying only on the route name. Confirm the exact Kaunas stop and destination terminal on the ticket.

Is there a direct train from Kaunas to Riga?

No. The daily Vilnius–Riga train does not call at Kaunas. From Kaunas, use an LTG Link domestic train to join it at Kaišiadorys or travel via Vilnius, depending on the live journey planner. Engineering work can alter the connection, so search the complete Kaunas–Riga journey for your date.

How do I travel from Kaunas to Tallinn by train?

Take a domestic LTG Link feeder from Kaunas to a Lithuanian stop on the Vilnius–Riga train, then use the Baltic through service towards Tallinn. The train continues through Riga, and the planned international transfer is at Valga to an Elron train. From Kaunas this usually means two changes and a full travel day.

Is the bus or train faster from Kaunas to Warsaw?

The fastest coach listing checked on 20 August 2026 was 4 hours 40 minutes. The annual rail pattern takes about 6 hours 25 minutes elapsed from Kaunas to Warsaw Central, including the one-hour time difference and the change at Mockava. The train may still be preferable for space and a daytime schedule.

Do I need a passport to travel from Lithuania to Latvia, Estonia or Poland?

Carry a valid passport or, if you are an eligible EU citizen, a valid national identity card. A driving licence is not a travel document. Non-EU travellers should also carry the passport, residence permit or visa documents that authorise their Schengen travel. Poland has temporary controls at the Lithuanian land border until 1 October 2026.

How much luggage can I take on an international coach?

It depends on the operator and ticket. Lux Express currently includes one hand-luggage item up to 5 kg and one hold item up to 23 kg. FlixBus lists one small bag up to 7 kg and one checked bag up to 20 kg. Dimensions, bicycles and extra bags have separate rules, so check the operator page before packing.

Are these international buses and trains accessible?

Assistance is available, but vehicle and station conditions vary. LTG Link asks for international rail assistance at least 24 hours before departure. Lux Express asks passengers who need assistance to notify it 36 hours ahead, and FlixBus requires advance contact for wheelchair arrangements. Confirm every leg, especially where a replacement bus or transfer is involved.
