Is Kaunas Safe? A Practical Guide for New Residents

Kaunas is generally suitable for living and solo city travel with normal urban precautions, but “safe” should never be presented as an absolute. Lithuania’s international travel-advisory level, the latest complete police-register data, and the city’s accessible emergency system all support a calm assessment. They do not make theft, harassment, traffic danger, scams, or violence impossible.

Is Kaunas safe? The short evidence-led answer

Laisvės alėja, the New Town, the Old Town, station approaches, and the main shopping and event areas have different rhythms by time of day. • Choose a lit main street over an unfamiliar shortcut through a park or riverside path.

• Check the last bus or trolleybus before the evening begins, not when you are already leaving.
• Use a recognised taxi app or registered taxi and match the plate and vehicle before entering.
• If someone is escalating a confrontation, create distance and move towards staff or other people.

There is no useful, official “no-go area” list for Kaunas. A blanket neighbourhood label also hides differences between a main road, an inner courtyard, a new development, and a poorly lit path. Solo travel and safety for women in Kaunas

Solo travel does not require fear, and safety advice should never transfer responsibility from an offender to the person targeted. It is still useful to reduce situations in which you have no easy exit. Meet a new contact in a public place, keep your own route home, share plans with someone you trust, and leave if boundaries are ignored. You do not owe politeness to a person making you feel unsafe.

Phones, wallets, bicycles, and cars

Everyday property protection is worth more attention than sensational crime stories. In a café or event, keep a phone and bag with you rather than “saving” a place unattended. On public transport, close zips and move a backpack where you can see it when crowded. Photograph the identity page of your passport and store the copy securely, separate from the original.

For a bicycle, use a strong lock through the frame and a fixed stand. A cable alone is better suited to securing a wheel than the whole bicycle. Record the frame number and keep a photograph and purchase record. Use secure indoor storage overnight where possible; an unlocked internal courtyard is not the same as controlled storage.

Lock a car even for a short stop and leave the cabin visibly empty. Rental-car paperwork, luggage, electronics, and keys should not sit in view. Check the street and doorway after dark, exterior lighting, door and window locks, smoke detection, emergency exit, guest rules, and where parcels and bicycles are left. A message may imitate a bank, parcel service, police officer, employer, or accommodation platform. Do not approve a Smart-ID or Mobile-ID request that you did not initiate, disclose codes, or sign into banking through a link in an unexpected message. Open the provider’s official app or type the known address yourself. If someone claims to be an authority, end the call and contact the institution through its published number.

Preserve the full conversation, account details, listing address, phone number, payment receipt, and screenshots before a page disappears. Contact your bank immediately if money has moved. If an offender is present, threatening someone, or the incident is still unfolding, use 112 rather than spending time collecting perfect evidence.

Calling 112 in Kaunas: what to say

Lithuania uses 112 for police, fire and rescue, emergency medical service, and environmental emergencies. Calls are free and available 24/7, including without a SIM card. The Emergency Response Centre accepts calls in English.

1. Move to a safer place if you can do so without delaying essential help.
2. Give the exact address: city, street, building, apartment or entrance, and any door code.
3. Say what happened, when it happened, and whether anyone is injured or still in danger.
4. Answer the call taker’s questions and follow instructions.
5. Do not hang up until told; keep the line available for a return call.

If you cannot name the address, describe a stop, bridge, business, monument, road sign, or share a map location. The official guidance stresses that the location is the most important first detail. A call is faster and more reliable than SMS whenever speaking is possible.

Non-emergency reporting and lost documents

For an incident that is over and does not require an immediate response, use the official ePolicija portal or contact Lithuanian Police on +370 700 60000. Record reference numbers and ask how to obtain a copy of the report if needed for insurance. When a passport or residence card is lost, report the loss and contact the issuing authority or your embassy promptly; a photograph of the document is useful but is not a replacement travel document.

If you are unsure whether the situation is urgent and there is a plausible immediate threat, call 112 and explain what is happening. The call taker determines which service is needed.
